With energy prices continually rising, Nick Redding, owner of several Foodland stores in South Australia, wanted to reduce his energy costs. Nick decided to participate in the Sustainability@Retail program that offers Metcash customers an energy audit, customised site solution and ongoing monitoring. As Metcash’s Sustainability Partner, SEDAC Energy Management (SEDAC EM) completed the audits of all of Redding’s sites and designed a solution to suit each store’s equipment and layout.
SEDAC EM was asked to implement the solution at Streaky Bay first since Redding lives closest to this site and wanted to see the solution in action. So, SEDAC EM hit the road out to the remote town of Streaky Bay and installed the solution over several days. “I have been impressed by the professionalism of SEDAC EM’s site staff and management during the audit, the installation and in the ongoing customer review process” said Redding. With a un-networked refrigeration system that has each compressor working in isolation, the Streaky Bay Foodland site required a unique solution to reduce the energy consumption of the refrigeration system.
Nick has stated “The reduction in energy use of my largest compressors, which has brought down refrigeration use 12%, has been a great solution for my site”. The sub-meter data has shown reductions in energy use from the HVAC and lighting solutions as well.
Happy with the accuracy and visibility of the sub-meter data, Nick Redding recently had an additional sub-meter put on his site to monitor his new solar power system. With this data he can see if the solar panels are living up to the promises of the solar company and ensures the system is working properly on sunny days.
The site has achieved between 11.7% and 14.7% savings per month since the installation. Having seen for himself SEDAC EM solutions and services work in his home town, Nick Redding is looking to proceed with his other sites.
